Prayer: Doing it Right

When you pray, ask the Father as he is the one who gives and provides. IN the name of Jesus.

Reasons why we don’t receive from God: James 4

v. 2 Because we don't ask

Also see John 16:24 - don't ask in his name

v. 3 “When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures”

When you pray, recognize that He is the Father – understand your relationship to Him

Jesus teaches us a life of prayer –

Mat 5:44-45 pray for those who persecute you

Mar 6: 46 he went to the mountain to pray

James 5:13 If there is any one of you in trouble he should pray

We have the authority to bless, but not to cover ppl w/ the blood of Christ. Christ's death and sacrifice has already been done. The blood is already applied. We can not take a paintbrush and dip it in the altar to reapply his work. It's in effect already. The song says - "There's power in the blood" which is true, but it's already in use.

Mat 7:7-8 Ask – given. Seek – you fill find. Knock and will be opened

Do what to my enemies?

Last week we read

Matthew 5:43-44 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

.

.

Most of you were a little surprised and were left with questions. This week we're going to read and talk about Romans 12:19-21

19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

.

So ask yourself

1. Why shouldn’t we take revenge? Who does the “getting even”?

2. What should we do then when somebody hurts us?

3. Why do you think Paul gave these actions and didn’t just tell us to say “God bless you”?

4. What is the result for helping your enemies?

Moses (pt 2) from Calling to Packing up

Here are the notes from Thursday's class. The series is looking at the Old Testament to help us understand the context of the rest of the bible. Last week we looked at the story of the growth of the Hebrew people in Egypt. Joseph's family (70 people) moved to Egypt because of famine throughout the land. After 400 years that 70 turned into a nation's worth of people. That made the Egyptians nervous but Pharaoh was not about to let all his cheap labor leave.

God called and sent Moses and Aaron to bring the people out into the desert. It was an ordeal, but God opened the way. We got up to passover and talked about how it is connected to the New Testament.

Exodus 3 God’s instructions to Moses

· God calls – Moses makes excuses

· (map from Egypt to Siani)

· Gives Aaron as a helper

Ex 7:8 sign that they’re backed by God – staff turns to a snake

V 10 – the Egyptian sorcerers could do the same “miracle” but Aaron’s swallowed up the others.

The enemy can mimic and do “the same” but the end shows the truth

V14 Even though he saw this, Pharaoh hardened his heart

“Let my people go” 1st plague (Next sign) – turned the water into blood

Ex 8: second plague – frogs

Third plague – gnats/mosquitos/piojos

Fourth plague – flies *distinction between Israelites and Egyptians

Ex 9 Fifth plague – livestock died

Sixth plague – boils/skin ulcers – the sorcerers couldn’t show up

Seventh plague – hail – hit men, animals, stripped crops and trees – except in Goshen, where the Israelites were

Ex 10 Eighth plague – locusts to finish the work on the plans that the hail left – cover the earth and living

Ninth plague – darkness – dense clouds for 3 days. Pharaoh got mad and told Moses not to come back.

Ex 11 Tenth plague- death of the firstborn –

Ex 12 Passover

The Passover lamb represents what Jesus was to do – inmolar/put the sins on the scapegoat

Passover dinner – modern equivalent - eat with your coats and shoes on, purse in hand – be ready to go

Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Living as an Example Pt 3

1 Timothy 4:12-13 (NIV) 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

We have talked about not letting people look down on you. We said this was living in a way that makes them know you a disciple!

Paul tells Timothy to SET an Paul doesn’t say “be good” but he tells Timothy to “be the best” – a leader, not a follower. We also talked about setting an example in speech and how our tongues are tricky. ( Psalms 34:13, 35:28, 37:30, 39:1, 139:4 Proverbs 10:9, 12:22, 15:2, 18:21, 28:23, Eccl 5:3, Mark 16:17, I Peter 3:10)

This week we’re going to look at behavior/conduct, love, and faith.

CONDUCT means

In Exodus 20, God gave Moses 10 rules of conduct – the 10 Commandments.

The Old Testament has 613 rules to guide people’s lives. In the New Testament, the writers give more guidance to the early Christians. But what did Jesus say about all this?

An expert of the Law questioned Jesus on conduct (Luke 10:27)

Deut. 6:5

Lev. 19:18

Jesus summarizes all the laws and prophets in Matthew 7:12, by saying

LOVE is (I John 4:10)

Where do we get love? Gal 5:22

If you love God, what else do you have to do? I John 4:20

I Timothy 1:5 What three things help you act in love?

More on love: What does love do? What is it like? I Corinthians 13

FAITH is (Hebrews 11:1)

What does faith do? Romans 3:22, Eph 2: 8

How do we get faith? Romans 10:17

What should we do with Christians who don’t have strong faith? Romans 14:1

What does faith help you to do? II Cor 1:24

Read more: Hebrews 11 is the “Hall of Faith” and tells you lots of heroes of the faith. Gal 2:16, 3:11-12 and James 1:14

Abraham was a great example of faith. Read his life story in Genesis 11:26-15:10

Joseph to Moses - How did they get into and out of Egypt?
